1. Chronology and dates: In 1917, Mahatma Gandhi led the Champaran Satyagraha in Bihar to address the grievances of indigo cultivators. It was one of his first major Satyagraha movements in India and began in April 1917. The Champaran Agrarian Act of 1918 provided relief to cultivators and brought the tinkathia system to an end. 2. Leaders and historical context: Raj Kumar Shukla persistently urged Gandhi to investigate the plight of Champaran's peasants. Under the tinkathia system, cultivators were compelled to grow indigo on 3/20 of their land. Gandhi investigated their complaints and employed nonviolent resistance. 3. Maharashtra's connection and significance: After Champaran, Gandhi participated in the Ahmedabad textile mill workers' strike and the Kheda Satyagraha in 1918. Anasuya Sarabhai played an important role in the Ahmedabad labour movement. Gopal Krishna Gokhale, a prominent leader from Maharashtra, had influenced Gandhi's political outlook through his public work. Champaran brought agrarian grievances into the national movement and helped establish Satyagraha as a method of political action in India.
Do not confuse three major Gandhian interventions: Champaran in 1917 concerned indigo cultivators; Ahmedabad in 1918 concerned textile mill workers; and Kheda in 1918 concerned land revenue relief for peasants. The Awadh peasant movement belongs mainly to the 1920–1922 period. These events are close enough chronologically to create common examination errors.
Remember the sequence: '1917 Champaran—Indigo; 1918 Ahmedabad—Labour; 1918 Kheda—Revenue.' This links each movement to its location and principal issue.
Option 1: The peasant movement in Awadh developed prominently during 1920–1922, alongside the Non-Cooperation Movement. Baba Ramchandra was one of its leading figures, making this distinct from Champaran in 1917. Option 2: Assam's tea plantation workers faced exploitative labour conditions, but their grievances were not the principal focus of the Champaran Satyagraha. Option 3: The textile mill workers' strike associated with Gandhi took place in Ahmedabad in 1918, not Bombay in 1917. Anasuya Sarabhai was an important figure in that movement. Option 4: The indigo cultivators of Bihar were the direct beneficiaries of the Champaran Satyagraha in 1917. Therefore, Option 4 is correct.
